E-mail Usage
Overview
If you are on the Internet, you already have an email address(e.g., "joesmith@machinename.domainname"). The name before the "@" symbol identifies the recipient of the mail (it can be a person, a position, or the name of a department or company). The information that follows the "@" symbol identifies the computer to which the mail is sent.
Further, hostnames have two parts: the specific name of the host (which can itself have many parts) followed by a period (a "dot") and a suffix indicating the "domain" classification of the host server, or in some cases, the country of the server. Some typical suffixes are: com (for company), gov (for government), mil for (military), edu (for educational institution), org (for non-profit organization); or, for instance, in the case of countries, us (for United States), and au (for Australia).
Netscape Navigator or Communicator allows you to read and send email as well as surf the Web. You can, however, use a program specifically designed for email. There are several available on the internet at FTP sites. Select an email program that supports MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions), which allows you to attach other files (including picture as well as text files) to any email message you send.

In addition to being a Web browser, Netscape Navigator can be used to send and receive email. The preference settings for Netscape mail are entered at Mail and News Preferences in the Options menu in Navigator or in the Edit/Preferences/Mail & Groups menu in Netscape Communicator.
